CPIML Statement on Communal Violence in Bangladesh

Violence in Bangladesh

The CPIML expresses deep concern at the ongoing communal violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh. Durga Puja, the biggest festive occasion for Hindus in Bangladesh, has become an occasion for sectarian communal forces to orchestrate violent attacks that have already spread to many districts and claimed several lives. While the Bangladesh Government’s assurances that the guilty will be identified and punished are welcome, the government must ensure that the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh is not subjected to increased insecurity and marginalisation.

We stand with the left parties of Bangladesh and citizens upholding the syncretic legacy of the subcontinent who have organised protests in solidarity with the victims of communal violence, and appeal to peace-loving citizens of India and Bangladesh to stand together to protest communal killings in Bangladesh, and rebuff and resist communal forces all over the subcontinent. The unfortunate incidents of Bangladesh must not be allowed to vitiate the environment in India and undermine the safety and rights of Muslims in India.
